About Terrafirma
Terrafirma Roadways, based near Thame in Oxfordshire, has been providing temporary roadway systems since 2001. As a division of Robertson Envirosystems Limited, Terrafirma Roadways is a growing company with a strong customer service ethos.
Terrafirma and Dura-Base Matting
Hugh Robertson, Managing Director of Terrafirma discovered the Dura-Base mats by accident whilst searching on the internet in 2006. He was researching for an alternative to the traditionally-used aluminium roadway panels. The use of Aluminium panels causes a high security risk, as well as presenting other related health and safety issues.

The Dura-Base mats provided the solution Hugh Robertson was looking for: a product which is safer, cleaner, more user-friendly, and with little risk of theft. Today, Terrafirma Roadways is the sole UK distributor for Dura-Base mats, manufactured in the US by Newpark Mat and Integrated Services. The company provides a first class temporary roadway service to companies across the UK, such as Viridor Waste Management, one of the UK's leading waste management companies.

People at Terrafirma
Hugh Robertson, Managing Director of Terrafirma Roadways, is closely involved with the day-to-day running of the company. Working closely with his team, Hugh’s priority is in providing customer support and a totally professional service.
Hugh’s background is in agricultural contracting. By the mid 1990s his company Robertson Envirosystems, was recycling bio-solids for the water industry. To provide this service, the company needed access to farmland all year round, and in all weather conditions. After hiring temporary roadways from a major national supplier, Hugh decided to overcome the inherent problems of supply and costs by designing and constructing his own system.
Hugh’s innovative approach continues today with the development of Terrafirma’s own grab, the Terra Multi Grab (TMG), which handles the Dura-Base mats safely and efficiently.
Chris Kirby, Terrafirma’s Operations Manager is not averse to getting his hands dirty! His role is very much hands-on and Terrafirma’s customer-centric approach means its team members can handle all aspects of the service. Chris has daily contact with the Terrafirma customers, as well as carrying out his duties in the office and yard. He frequently works in a sales capacity in addition to carrying out site surveys. Chris also manages the crew who carry out the site installations.
Chris was previously a member of HM Armed Forces where he dealt with administration, pay and allowances. His customer-focussed career continued when he ran his own community shop for over fourteen years. If the need arises, Chris can also be found driving a truck to the site, and even fitting the Dura-Base panels if it means the customer’s deadlines will be met.
Team-work is an important part of Terrafirma Roadway’s philosophy. Its staff of ten provide temporary road and platform solutions to companies and organisations across the country. Running its own fleet of vehicles means Terrafirma can respond quickly and efficiently to meet your needs and deadlines.
